This video gives a lot of information on the California Gold Rush that was not discussed in class.  What are some new pieces of information that you learn from the video?  Did you hear any of the Amazing Words we learned in class?

How to Pan for Gold..

Hello 5th Graders,

While we were discussing ghost towns and the Western frontier, many of you were asking how people pan for gold.  Well, here is a video that explains just how it is done. Notice how the task is tedious and redundant.  Would you like to pan for gold?  Why or why not?

BOGGLE!

How does technology help adventurers reach new places?

Hey there!

This week we read the a story about the Titanic.  The question of the week was asking us to think about, "how does technology help adventurers reach new places?" We had a lot of great discussions among the class.  The Titanic was an interesting topic.

For your response this week, I would like you to blog about something you learned that you didn't know before OR respond to the question of the week.  I look forward to reading your thoughtful responses.

How can we find adventure in ordinary events?

Greetings 5th Graders!

This week we discussed how an ordinary event in life can turn into an adventure.  There were several examples given in class.  One example that comes to my mind was the time we were all walking to gym and there was a BAT hanging from the doorway!!! Who would've thought that we would encounter a bat on our routine walk to P.E. class?!  That definitely turned an ordinary day into an adventure for us and other people at Lindop.

Your task is to share a personal experience from when YOU had an ordinary event turn into an adventure.  Explain what made it an adventure.  Make sure to use proper grammar, spelling, punctuation, etc.

Have a great weekend!

How do people adapt to new places?

This week we talked a lot about how people adapt to new places.  It was discussed in class that when a student is new to a school they should adapt by being friendly to others, join extra-curricular activities, and take a tour of the new school.

When I first bought a house I had to adapt in several ways.  All of the bills and paperwork were very overwhelming.  I adapted by going out and buying some file folders and a crate to organize all of the mail.  I was unfamiliar with the area so I did some research on the internet about the what stores were nearby.  I also made a point to walk around the neighborhood and say hello to my neighbors.  These are some of the ways I adapted to my new home.

What is a way that YOU had to adapt to a new place?

ADAPTATIONS: Exploding Ants!

Below is a video about how animals adapt to survive.

What is an example of people or other animals adapting that you have seen in your lifetime?

Right now my dog, Max, is going through an adaptation that a lot of other dogs go through as well.  Max is shedding his fur like crazy.  There is dog hair everywhere! Max sheds his winter coat to get ready for the warmer weather in spring and summer.  The spring coat is also much lighter fur compared to his winter coat.  This adaptation allows Max to be more comfortable in the hot months of June, July, etc.  I am glad this adaption only happens twice a year, otherwise I might become a giant fur ball!

Overcoming Obstacles

This week we read "Tripping over the Lunch Lady" and discussed how one can overcome obstacles.  Your assignment is to tell about a time you had to overcome an obstacle.  Put thought into your response and make sure to proofread your responses.  Below is an example of a time I, personally, had to overcome an obstacle.

Last summer I went on a cruise to Alaska with some friends and family.  During one of the stops on the cruise we went rock climbing and rappelling down a 60 foot cliff.  I was face to face with my fear of heights!  I wanted to overcome this obstacle and make the trip memorable. All I could do as I was shaking on the side of this giant cliff was tell myself I would be ok, even though I was really petrified.  At one point I even fell UPSIDE DOWN while rappelling down the cliff!!!  Thank goodness for my harness and trained tour guides. Through determination, persistence (AW!), and supportive friends and family I was able to conquer (AW!) my obstacle of heights.

Magnificent Mobiles!

Here are a few examples of some magnificent mobiles...

Monday, January 30, 2012

Mobile Book Project: Due TOMORROW!!!

Create a mobile using the four story elements of your book.  Your mobile will have 5 parts: title and author, setting, characters, plot, and theme.
  • Use the title and the author to decorate the part of your mobile that the other parts will hang from.
  • For each part, find one or more small objects or pictures to represent that part of the story.
  • For each object or picture, make a 3x5 note with a paragraph explaining why that object or picture is important to the story.
  • Tie or tape the object and the note card to a piece of string or thread and hang it on your mobile. You can have several objects and note cards on one string – for example, if your story has 3 main
characters, you could have 3 objects and 3 cards on one string. Use a different string for each story element for a total of 4.
  • A wire hanger makes a good mobile. A stick will also work or pair of sticks tied to together in a cross.
  • If you use pictures, glue them to a cardboard backing.
  • You could put two pictures back to back.  Try to place your strings so that your mobile balances evenly.

Special Effetcs: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2

    Greetings!
This week we are talking about how artists create special effects to entertain us. One example where artists use special effects to entertain me (and a lot of other people) was in Harry Potter. There are tons of special effects used in all of the Harry Potter movies that make wizards, goblins, Hogwarts, and dueling wands all seem SO real. I really love all of the movies. Some of the "bad" characters are made to seem so gruesome and that is because of the special effects. When I saw the last movie in 3D, I really thought I was there with all of the characters. Hogwarts came to life!

Question: What is an example for you, personally, where an artist used special effects to entertain you?

Here are examples of various special effects. Enjoy!

    Inspirational Song- YOU Are Beautiful!

The question of the week is, "How does an artist use music to inspire others?"

This song, "Beautiful" by Christina Aguilera, sends a very inspirational message about beauty. It inspires me to continue to promote a positive, BULLY FREE environment at Lindop where "words can't bring you down". The words that come out of your mouth should be motivating and uplifting. I want all of my students to view themselves as beautiful, inside and out. We all come in different shapes, sizes, and colors. Love yourself because you are all beautiful.

Fifth graders, I ask you... What artist and/or song inspires you? Explain using complete sentences.

    Mahalia Jackson

This week we are reading an expository text about Mahalia Jackson. Below is a link to the song, "How I Got Over" by Mahalia Jackson. Mahalia Jackson moved to Chicago when she was sixteen. She was a favorite artist of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Mahalia sang this song at the March on Washington just before King gave the infamous "I Have a Dream" speech.

Clay Dinosaurs with Fact and Opinion

Last week in reading we studied fact and opinion.  In the biography we read about Waterhouse Hawkins, we learned that Mr. Hawkins was the first person to construct life-size replicas of dinosaurs.  What he did was truly fascinating. (opinion!) As a way to integrate art, the students constructed their own dinosaurs using clay and play dough. After they were done building their dinosaurs, the students wrote facts and opinions to go along with their creation.  Here is a look at a few dinosaurs that came to life in 5E! ENJOY!

    What is your favorite dinosaur?

    Hey 5th Graders!
This week we are reading the story, "The Dinosaurs of Waterhouse Hawkins" by Barbara Kerley.  Tell me what your favorite dinosaur is and why.  Make sure to use complete sentences. Write a minimum of five sentences in your post.  If you are able to, include a link to a website that is about your favorite dinosaur.
